Yesterday the main enigma of the Russian political life turned clear. Putin decided to stay.
Back in ancient Rome. When people who greeted Julius Cesar as a king he replied that he is not a king but a Cesar. Later on, at the festival of Lupercalia, when Cesar had already been named the Dictator Perpetuo (dictator for life), Marcus Antonius offered him diadem as a symbol of king’s power. But Cesar refused. Repeated attempts of Antonius were many times declined by Cesar and this was cheered by the crowd.
Many times Putin was offered by different people the idea to stay a President after 2026, but he has always declined the idea. Until yesterday, when he accepted the possibility to participate in the next election, subject to agreement of the Constitutional Court.
Not being the member of the fun club of Putin, I still don’t oppose the idea of his staying in the office for some more years, because I do not see who can do the job better in the current situation and current political environment. Though, strictly speaking, I do not like the way it was presented, I feel a bit tricked.
But my feelings do not matter much. What matters more is the difference between the situation with Cesar and Putin. When Cesar declined the diadem, the crowd applauded him.
Like it or not, but the great majority of Russians are in favor of the idea that Putin should stay in the office as long as he can. In such a situation legal details do not matter much.
We should also have in mind, that without Cesar Rome very quickly turned into chaos and war of everybody against everybody. And the king’s power, which he was constantly accused of, without him very quickly became a reality.
